Flexible and sustainable lighting: Plug&Play technology

DGA’s patented Plug&Play system makes lighting flexible, modular and sustainable. Each component — LED modules, optics, optical filters, decorative rings — can be replaced or upgraded individually, simplifying maintenance and keeping projects up to date.

This technology allows architectural lighting to be adapted even long after installation, without compromising light output, visual comfort or the products’ lifespan, whilst reducing environmental impact.

In this sense, the true value of Plug&Play goes beyond maintenance. A luminaire does not become outdated with installation, but is renewed alongside it — one component at a time — remaining consistent with the space even as requirements change.

Modularity as a design principle

Every component of the luminaire — from the optics to the optical filter, from the decorative ring to the LED module — is designed to be removed and refitted independently. Replacing a lens or adapting the luminaire to a new aesthetic requirement: these are all standalone operations that never require work to be carried out on the entire luminaire.

Designing with Plug&Play technology means adopting a circular philosophy: every component can be renewed without replacing the entire luminaire. The result is a product designed to last longer, reducing waste over time.

It is not just a design promise: the luminaires in the Ariel and Saturno ranges have achieved TM66 certification, the LIA/CIBSE standard that measures the circularity of lighting products using the CEAM method, falling within the ‘Excellent’ category of the rating scale — the category reserved for products designed to last, be repaired and upgraded over time.

Design freedom

The Plug&Play system offers lighting designers and architects the opportunity to update their projects over time. The modular nature of the components allows for rapid and targeted adjustments, whilst maintaining consistent performance, visual comfort and design coherence even as project requirements change.

This flexibility is also applicable to outdoor environments, where conditions change more frequently and more rapidly: a garden that grows, a façade that transforms, a path that needs rethinking. Updating a single element on site, without dismantling the entire luminaire, means being able to keep pace with the evolution of an outdoor space without ever having to start from scratch.
