Portugal Jewels Store

Lighting Design by DGA in a Historic Lisbon Boutique

A project by LADO Arquitectura e Design | Lighting Consultant: Miragem Iluminação Arquitectural

In Lisbon’s vibrant historic center, within the iconic Largo do Chiado, a small yet sophisticated retail space comes to life: the Portugal Jewels Store. Occupying just 40 m² inside an 18th-century building that once housed the legendary Barbearia Campos, this boutique is more than a shop—it’s a tribute to memory, craftsmanship, and contemporary design.

Conceived by LADO Arquitectura e Design, the project carefully balances heritage and modernity, preserving the soul of the original space while introducing a refined, contemporary language. Central to this transformation is the lighting design, curated by Miragem Iluminação Arquitectural and powered almost entirely by DGA lighting solutions—chosen for their discretion, flexibility, and high performance.

Design Concept: Where Heritage Meets Contemporary Elegance

Rather than radically altering the interior, the design approach enhances the existing spatial identity. Original features—including the vintage barber’s counter and six wall-mounted mirrors—have been integrated into a new layout that emphasizes material contrast and chromatic intensity.

A custom display system runs along the right wall, comprising bespoke cabinets, glass showcases, and a central service counter. The design’s signature is its bold use of Klein blue, which contrasts elegantly with the patina of the historical surfaces. This deep blue tone flows through the ceiling, woodwork, mirror films, and even the flooring, where handcrafted encaustic tiles replicate the original pattern in a refined tonal variation.

The result is a compact yet expressive retail interior, where materials, color, and light converge in a harmonious visual dialogue

Architectural Lighting by DGA: Precision, Miniaturization, Customization

In such a highly detailed and spatially constrained setting, the lighting strategy needed to be precise, unobtrusive, and adaptable. Working closely with DGA,  Miragem Iluminação Arquitectural selected a complete range of miniaturized lighting fixtures, specifically designed to meet the technical and aesthetic demands of a jewelry retail environment.

Installed Products:

  • MINI TINI – Ultra-compact LED projectors installed within interior showcases. Three fixtures per display ensure optimal, glare-free lighting, highlighting the brilliance and texture of each piece without overwhelming the space.
  • MINI TINI B MICRO – Mounted on vertical tracks with a white finish in the street-facing windows. These flexible, low-visual-impact solutions allow for adjustable spotlighting at varying heights—perfect for narrow storefronts.
  • ARIEL IP40 9W – Compact recessed downlights installed in the ceiling with spring mounting. Selected for their beam angle versatility and custom RAL 5024 finish, perfectly aligned with the project’s color palette.
  • ARIEL Am – A discreet yet elegant fixture positioned above the service counter, offering focused and comfortable task lighting.

Tailor-Made Lighting Solutions for a Unique Retail Experience

“It all started with the search for the smallest possible fixture that could highlight the jewelry pieces without drawing attention to itself. DGA already had all the right answers.”

The use of DGA luminaires enabled seamless integration of performance-driven illumination into a historic and visually sensitive environment. Key to the project’s success was the ability to fully customize products—from finishes to optics—ensuring that each element served both form and function without compromise.

A New Ritual: Light, Memory, Material

This project is not just a retail fit-out—it’s a poetic reinterpretation of a culturally significant interior. The transformation of the former Barbearia Campos into the Portugal Jewels boutique speaks to the power of design to reshape memory.

Here, light is not just functional—it’s narrative. It guides the customer experience, enhances the storytelling of each piece, and redefines an old ritual of self-care into a new one: the act of adorning oneself with something precious

Thanks to a meticulous architectural concept and a lighting scheme tailored with DGA’s high-performance, low-visibility luminaires, the space becomes both a showroom and a sanctuary—a place where heritage and innovation coexist under perfect illumination
